Description

The AN/SPQ-11 “Cobra Judy” is a shipborne long-range surveillance radar, operating in the S-band (2,900–3,100 MHz), designed to detect and track intercontinental ballistic missiles. Manufactured by Raytheon E-Systems, this United States-origin system was designed in 1976 and became operational in 1981, mounted aboard the USNS Observation Island. Its octagonal passive phased array antenna, approximately 7 meters in diameter, comprises 12,288 elements and is fed by 16 traveling wave tubes. The entire radar system, weighing about 250 tonnes and standing over 40 feet high, is mounted on an azimuth pedestal and has an instrumented range exceeding 3,700 km.
