Description

The US Navy's Standard SM-6 Block IB is an upgraded variant featuring a more powerful rocket engine potentially allowing the missile to reach hypersonic speeds. The new SM-6 missile variant may be intended to shoot down hypersonic targets such as the latest Russian and Chinese anti-ship missiles. The new missile also has improved capabilities against ballistic missiles. The Block IB variant might be deployed by the mid-2020s.
