Description

The Missile Longue Portee (MLP), Long Range Missile in English, is a long-range missile aimed at outfitting the ground vehicles to be procured under the French Army's SCORPION program. The MLP is intended against any ground target from armored vehicles with the latest generation armor kits to bunkers either stationary or on the move at ranges in excess of eight kilometers. The MLP is a member of the MMP missile family unveiled by MBDA during the Eurosatory exhibition in June 2010. The SCORPION program calls for 300 EBRC tank destroyer vehicles and 2,000 VBMR medium armored vehicles beginning in 2018 and 2015 respectively. The MLP and MMP missile seeker to be developed by Sagem combines CCD-TV daylight camera and uncooled infrared sensor imagery with inertial navigation system (INS) supporting fire-and-forget firing mode. Besides, an optic fiber data link allows the operator to minimize collateral damage watching over the impact area, re-targeting the MMP missile in-flight and/or hit targets which are located beyond or out of the visual range. MLP has the same diameter than MMP and thus both will share many sub-assemblies allowing for lower operating and production costs and minimizing the risk associated with development of complex weapon systems. In June 2022, MBDA re-named the anti-tank missile family as Akeron.
