Description

The AN/TPY-2 is an X-band (8.55-10 GHz) air defense radar developed by Raytheon E-Systems for the Ballistic Missile Defense System and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon system. This ground/air-transportable radar, with an instrumented range of 1000 km, is designed to detect, track, and discriminate ballistic missile threats at long distances and very high altitudes, including space. Its static, trailer-mounted, single-faced 9.2 m² wideband phased array antenna contains 72 semiconductor transceiver modules feeding 25,344 antenna elements, with digital beamforming controlling the antenna pattern and beam deflection. The system, which uses linear frequency-modulated intrapulse modulation and requires 2.1 megawatts of power, is air-transportable by up to five C-17 aircraft and is deployed in the USA, Israel, and Japan.
