Description

The Russian Navy Project 545, also known as Laika, is a fifth generation, nuclear-powered, multi-purpose submarine intended to carry both cruise and ballistic missiles. The Laika submarine leverages some advanced technologies from the Husky submarine project. The Malakhit Design Bureau along with the Sevmash shipyard should take care of building the lead boat of this class that is slated for commissioning in the 2027-2028 timeframe following a contract signed in 2019. The ship will be smaller than the Yasen class and is expected to get the latest Russian cruise missiles such as Zircon as well as a new ballistic missile. The Project 545 will feature a double hull design with the external one made of composite materials to minimize noise emissions.
