Description

The Blue Shark is a lightweight torpedo developed by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and LIG Nex1 to meet the requirements of the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN). The torpedo is qualified for launch from surface ships using pressurized torpedo tubes, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters such as Super Lynx and maritime patrol aircraft such as P-3C Orion against sophisticated submarines in blue or shallow water. The Blue Shark features a sophisticated acoustic array sensor with beam-steering function, shaped charge warhead capable of penetrating 1.5-meter thick of steel, and an impact fuze. The propulsion system consists of a pump-jet propeller with a DC motor fed by aluminum-silver oxide battery activated by seawater developing a top speed in excess of 45 knots. The RoKN introduced the Blue Shark torpedo in late 2005.
