Description

The Hoot is a supercavitating, high-speed torpedo developed by the Islamic Republic of Iran to engage surface ships. The first test of such experimental weapon was carried out in February 2015 and a new test was carried out in the Strait of Hormuz in May 2017. The supercavitating weapon uses rocket fuel to vaporize the water around the torpedo as it moves underwater. The supercavitating effect creates a bubble around the torpedo minimizing drag and maximizing speed to the level of 360 kilometers per hour. The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy may deploy the Hoot torpedo from its surface ships and submarines.
