Description

The FH-97A Chinese Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) can accompany manned aircraft and provide it with intelligence, information and firepower support, made its debut at the Airshow China 2022 held in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province in early November, with its chief designer saying that this new technology is expected to greatly change conventional air combat. Based on this cutting-edge combat concept, the FH-97A loyal wingman drone is designed as a new type of autonomous UAV formation system. It can form a dense formation and efficiently coordinate with manned combat aircraft to perform air superiority operations, air defense suppression, and air escort missions, the Global Times learned from the drone's developers. It can solve not only the problems of limited service scale of manned aircraft and aging aircraft, but also build a pattern of unmanned cooperative combat. The FH-97A can carry out collaborative reconnaissance with special mission aircraft, as it can detect potential threats and provide early warning by flying ahead of the manned aircraft, or it can also extend the reconnaissance time and scope taking advantage of its long endurance and range. When cooperating with a fighter jet, the FH-97A can carry out air defense suppression by carrying electronic reconnaissance and jamming payloads and conduct close-in reconnaissance and interference tasks, which can allow the fighter to penetrate the enemy defense and also constantly paralyze the enemy's air defense system.

Air & Air Defense Specifications
Engine The drone's dual-engine setup provides both power and redundancy. Should one engine fail, the other can take over, ensuring that the FH-97A can still complete its mission. This makes the drone reliable for long-range operations in hostile environments, far from resupply and maintenance facilities.
Max Speed 2.5 km/h
Range 2400.0 km
Service Ceiling 18 m
Wingspan 12.00 m
Variants
FH-97 The Feihong FH-97 is a prototype unmanned combat aerial vehicle with stealth capabilities. It was developed as a "loyal wingman" drone, designed to suppress air defenses with electronic countermeasures, fly ahead of aircraft to provide early warning, and absorb damage from attacks, as well as providing reconnaissance and damage evaluation.

Stealth Capabilities The drone’s design is purpose-built for stealth operations. Its pointed nose and sleek body are more than just aesthetic choices; they are integral to reducing its radar signature, ensuring it can infiltrate hostile airspace with minimal detection. This “stealth” design also contributes to the drone’s stability and performance at high speeds, making it ideal for reconnaissance or strategic strikes at high altitudes. The shape of the FH-97A isn’t just about evading radar, but also about ensuring it can fly with minimal drag, even when carrying out complex maneuvers or fast operations.
Autonomous Capabilities Autonomous, yet capable of working in tandem with manned aircraft, the FH-97A offers a range of mission sets. It can provide air superiority, suppress enemy air defenses, and perform escort duties for fighter jets. By flying ahead of piloted aircraft, it can conduct reconnaissance, spotting threats, and relaying real-time intelligence to commanders. Its endurance allows it to extend the range of reconnaissance missions, providing valuable data without putting pilots at risk.

Takeoff and Landing In addition to conventional wheeled take-off and landing on runways, this type of UAV can also use rocket booster for complete take-off and landing under special conditions, and carry out arrested recovery. notable feature of the FH-97A is its ability to launch via CATOBAR [catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery]. This launch system is designed for rapid deployment from aircraft carriers like the Fujian or the Type 076 LHD, which can be especially valuable for operating from the relatively small deck spaces of Chinese naval carriers. The launch system ensures that the drone can transition from stationary to airborne in mere seconds, allowing it to quickly engage in operations without sacrificing stability or precision. The fact that it can be launched from various platforms underscores its versatility and compatibility across different operational environments.

Missiles The FH-97A is equipped to carry multiple air-to-air missiles, including the PL-15, which is China’s equivalent of the American AIM-120 AMRAAM. With a range of about 100 kilometers, the PL-15 is designed for beyond-visual-range engagements with enemy aircraft, allowing the FH-97A to engage in aerial combat from a distance with minimal risk. The drone can also carry the PL-10, a short-range air-to-air missile designed for close combat, with a range of up to 20 kilometers. This makes the FH-97A a formidable opponent for any adversary attempting to close in on it.
