Description

The Aist, 'Stork' in English, is a medium altitude long-endurance (MALE) multipurpose tactical unmanned air vehicle (TUAV) designed to provide target designation for long-range artillery units. The Russian Army expects to deploy the new TUAV in support of the Iskander-M tactical quasi-ballistic missile beginning in 2011. In early 2009, Vega Radio Engineering Corp. started the Aist flight test program which is expected to last until 2011. In addition to aerial surveillance equipment for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Designation and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions, the air vehicle could be equipped with up to 500 kg of electronic warfare devices and weapons for electronic attack and ground attack missions respectively. The Aist will be larger than the United States Air Force MQ-1 Predator but very similar in performance and capabilities.
