Description

The SMART-S (Signaal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Targeting) is a naval 3D target indication and surveillance radar system manufactured by Hollandse Signaalapparaten BV. Operating in the F-band (formerly S-band), it provides automatic detection, track initiation, and maintenance for up to 160 air and 40 surface targets simultaneously, with gapless hemispheric coverage from the sea surface upwards. Designed for all types of naval vessels, it excels in heavy clutter and electronic countermeasures environments, capable of detecting small, high-speed anti-ship missiles with radar cross-sections down to 0.1 m² and speeds exceeding Mach 3, whether sea-skimming or arriving from high angles (up to 70°). The system features a hydraulically stabilized antenna with ultra-low sidelobe phased arrays for multiple receive beams, a coherent Traveling Wave Tube transmitter with 145 kW peak power, and incorporates advanced anti-clutter and electronic counter-countermeasures such as broadband transmission, pulse repetition frequency and radio frequency agility, and jamming analysis sensors. It has an instrumented range of 55 nautical miles (100 km), a range resolution of 0.5 nautical miles, a beamwidth of 2 degrees, and an antenna rotation speed of 27 rpm (2.22 seconds per rotation). Integral Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) can also be provided.
