M1028

M1028 is a 120mm anti-personnel canister cartridge designed to be fired from the main cannon of the M1A1/A2 Abrams main battle tank. Once fired, the cartridge contains tungsten balls that provide a 'shotgun-like effect' from the muzzle of the tank out to several hundred meters. The tungsten balls can be used to clear enemy dismounts, break up hasty ambush sites in urban areas, clear defiles, stop infantry attacks and counter-attacks, and support friendly infantry assaults by providing cover-by-fire. The M1028 was developed to provide US Army and US Marine Corps Expeditionary force with quick-response, highly lethal, direct fire capability for its M1 Abrams main battle tanks. The M1028 projectile will be assembled at General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, facilities at Red Lion, Pennsylvania. On January 7, 2005, the US Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, awarded General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems a $5.8 million fixed-price contract for Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) of 3,600 M1028 cartridges. This contract was the result of successful completion of system development and demonstration.
