Design
The grenade itself consists of a light steel cylinder with a copper rotating band and an internal pre-engraved wire fragmentation sleeve. The grenade has a long parallel-sided body and an internal notched steel wire fragmentation coil to produce optimum-sized fragments. The grenade has a thin copper driving band near the base and (when unfired) a metallic gold short stubby cartridge case into which the grenade projectile is attached. Depending on the model cartridge used, the upper body of the VMG-M fuze is chemically colored gold (VOG-17M cartridge) or blue (VOG-26 cartridge).
Pressure Chamber
The VOG-26 is a modified VOG-17M cartridge that internally has a high/low-pressure chamber added to the cartridge case that allows the round to be shoulder-fired from a specially designed shotgun-type weapon.
Fuze
The VMG or VMG-M fuze is bore safe and does not arm until it has travelled several meters beyond the muzzle of the launcher.
