Description

The Vega launch vehicle is being managed by the European Space Agency (ESA) with ELV Spa (joint venture between the Italian Space Agency ASI and FiatAvio) as the launch vehicle's prime contractor. The Vega Launcher is scheduled to enter service in mid 2006 carrying small and medium-sized satellite and spacecraft payloads. The Vega launch vehicle will be capable of carrying a 3,307 lb (1,500 kg) payload to a 700 km circular orbit. Its propulsion system comprises three solid propellant stages. The P80, Zefiro 23 and Zefiro 9 solid propellant motors power the three stages respectively. The launcher is topped by the UAVM liquid propellant upper stage. The Arianespace consortium will be responsible for marketing and operation of the Vega launch system with an expected rate of 3-4 launches per year. The first launch of the Vega rocket was carried out on February 13, 2012.
