The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Shortfin Barracuda Block 1A is a new class of conventionally powered submarines developed under the Sea 1000 program which was awarded to DCNS of France by the Government of Australia in April 2016. The Shortfin Barracuda Block 1A will consist of 12 boats each with a displacement submerged of roughly 4,500 tons and more than 90 meters in length. These boats may feature a sophisticated air independent propulsion (AIP) system. The Sea 1000 program represents an investment estimated at 34 billion Euro with the first boat to be delivered by the mid 2020s. The project was cancelled in September 2021 after Australia joined the AUKUS partnership.
