The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Osumi-class ships have been designed to perform amphibious assault missions. These ships are capable of carrying and disembark Marines and their equipment through helicopters and landing craft. Reduced radar cross section was provided to enhance the ship's survivability. The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) has ordered four Osumi-class ships with the lead ship, LST4001 JS Osumi, commissioned in 1998. The Osumi-class landing ships feature an spacious flight deck for MH-53E and SH-60J helicopters and a well deck for two LCAC landing craft. Besides, they can transport up to 330 troops. Two Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems have been provided for ship self-defense against potential airborne threats. The propulsion system combines two shaft and two diesel engines developing 26,000-shp allowing a top speed of 22 knots.
