Description

The Orbital Sciences Corporation Minotaur IV is a four-stage space launch vehicle (SLV) using the retired LGM-118A Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) rocket motors. The Minotaur IV SLV is capable of delivering payloads of up to 3,800-lb into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The fourth stage motor is based on the same Orion 38 used by the Minotaur I. Minotaur VI is an evolutionary version of Minotaur IV featuring five stages and the ability to deliver up to 7,000-lb into LEO. The Minotaur VI adds a commercial solid rocket upper stage to the previous four stages. The first payload launch utilizing a Minotaur IV SLV was carried out in April 2010. As of September 2013, the United States of America (USA) has conducted five launches utilizing the Minotaur IV rocket. The Minotaur V five-stage high energy space launch vehicle is an evolution of the Minotaur IV rocket. It is a cost-effective system to launch USA payloads into high energy trajectories including Geosynchronous Transfer Orbits (GTO) as well as translunar and beyond. This SLV can be launched from sites in California, Florida, Alaska and Mid-Atlantic. The first three stages belong to the Peacekeeper ICBM and the fourth and fifth are STAR commercial motors (STAR 48BV and STAR 37FM). The Minotaur V can deliver up to 532 kg to GTO and 650 kg to Moon Transfer Orbit (MTO). The first launch of the Minotaur V with NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) spacecraft aborad was conducted on September 6, 2013.
