Description
The AN/APG-85 is a new Ku-band (IEEE designation) or J-band (NATO designation) fire control radar developed by Northrop Grumman for the F-35 Lightning stealth multi-role fighter aircraft. It features an active electronically scanned array (AESA) antenna with a diameter of 73.5 cm, comprising over 2,400 gallium nitride (GaN) transmit/receive modules, which contribute to a 50% improvement in range compared to its predecessor, the AN/APG-81, achieving an instrumented range of 225 km. Announced in January 2023, the radar's larger size necessitates a redesign of the F-35's front fuselage to accommodate it, with potential operational deployment by 2030.
