Description
J-8 is a twin-engine, single-seat interceptor developed by China as a potential replacement to Mig-21. Dubbed Finback by western intelligence, production started in 1979 with J-8 followed by improved J-8 I in the mid 1980s and J-8 II in the late 1980s. J-8 and J-8 I feature poor aerodynamic performance and scarce armament compared to modern air defense fighters. The Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) operates around 300 J-8/J-8 I aircraft. Export designation is F-8. J-8 II is an improved variant of J-8 featuring pulse nose-mounted Doppler radar and more powerful engines. F-8 II and F-8 IIM designations refer to export models.
