Description

The AN/TPQ-47 artillery locating radar is an extremely advanced derivative of the combat-proven AN/TPQ-37 firefinder radar. The TPQ-47 will provide a more survivable, longer range radar that requires less manpower to transport, set up and maintain. The TPQ-47 consists of a Operation Central, the Antenna Transceiver Group, the Prime Power Group and the Portable Operations Suite. The upgraded TPQ-47 replaces the antenna group to double the current range performance and adds the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS) software to ensure rapid counterfire. The TPQ-47 will be able to detect incoming tactical ballistic missiles at ranges out of 300 kilometers. Artillery at ranges of 60 kilometers, mortars at ranges of 30 kilometers and rocket launchers at ranges of100 kilometers. According to sources from the Raytheon company, the maximum detection range of this firefinder system is 400 kilometers. Reliability has been improved, the system will produce no more than a 1 false location in 12 hours of operation. The TPQ-47 would be set up in just 15 minutes by a crew of 8-person. The TPQ-47 can be transported in a single C-130 aircraft or by multiple CH-47 helicopter lifts. The displacement can be carried out by a crew of 6 person. Modular design increases availability, reduces maintainability and eases field-repair operations. The TPQ-47 will take profit from some technology related to the TPQ-36(V)8 electronic upgrade program such as the control shelter. The US Army will use the AN/TPQ-47 to replace currently fielded AN/TPQ-37 artillery firefinder radars and to counter emerging theater ballistic missiles threats.
