TWISTER

The Timely Warning and Interception with Space-based TheatER (TWISTER) is a European project at delivering a missile interceptor system by 2030. The TWISTER is an endo-atmospheric interceptor capable of neutralizing maneuverable ballistic missiles, intermediate range ballistic missiles (IRBM), hypersonic and supersonic cruise missiles. Besides, the new missile system may take out hypersonic gliders and next generation combat aircraft. The European TWISTER missile system is expected to be deployed on both existing and planned ground and sea platforms. Finland, Netherlands, France, Italy and Spain are the five countries promoting the new missile system approved by the European Council in November 2019. It is unlikely that the Europeans can afford to develop such system in such a tight timeframe with the TWISTER more likely becoming operational by 2040. Technical and scientific knowledge required for such enterprise are not found across Europe or the United States both lagging far behind Russia and China in this area.
