Description

The 76N6 Acquisition Radar, known by its NATO designator “Clam Shell,” is a low-altitude battlefield search and acquisition radar operating in the I-band. This Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar is designed to detect and track low radar cross-section targets, such as cruise missiles, at extremely low altitudes within ground clutter and under intense electronic countermeasures (ECM). With an average power of 1.4 kW and an instrumented range of 120 km, the fully automatic system provides target track information, including velocity, range, and bearing, to the fire control systems of the static SA-10A or mobile SA-10B Grumble area defense surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems. It features selectable 1 or 6-degree vertical beamwidths and beam polarization, utilizing a split antenna arrangement with a large beak to prevent transmitter spillover, where the doubly curved transmit and receive reflectors each measure 9.2 feet per side.
