Description

The Centauro II Italian 8x8 Armored Tank Destroyer is Italy’s latest-generation 8×8 wheeled gun system/tank destroyer, developed by the Iveco–Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) as the successor to the original B1 Centauro. It is designed to deliver main battle tank–level firepower on a highly mobile, strategically deployable wheeled chassis for reconnaissance, anti‑tank, and fire-support roles. The Centauro II is intended to combine high road speed and long range with a gun and FCS comparable to contemporary MBTs, for employment by cavalry/reconnaissance and rapid‑reaction forces. In practical terms, Centauro II offers MBT‑class firepower with wheeled-vehicle strategic mobility, allowing rapid redeployment by road and easier deployment to distant theatres than tracked MBTs. Centauro II is optimized for: Reconnaissance and security for heavy forces, where it can overmatch legacy MBTs and IFVs with its 120 mm gun while exploiting speed; Rapid reaction and expeditionary missions, where wheeled platforms with long range and good strategic deploy ability are preferable to heavy tracked MBTs; Urban and peace support operations, especially when equipped with an RWS and non‑lethal/low‑collateral munitions, while still retaining heavy‑gun overmatch; and Anti‑tank / overwatch roles, acting as a mobile gun platform behind lighter wheeled APC/IFV elements.

Main Weapon System
Note 1 x 120 mm / 45‑calibre smoothbore gun (third‑generation), derived from Oto Melara’s HITFACT family. Designed to deliver firepower comparable to Western MBTs while mounted on an 8×8 chassis. Fully compatible with standard NATO 120 mm tank ammunition, including: APFSDS; Multi‑purpose/HEAT; Advanced programmable air‑burst and smart munitions (e.g., modern MBT‑class 120 mm rounds). Semi‑automatic loading system, reducing crew fatigue and maintaining a high sustained rate of fire. 12 rounds of 120 mm ammunition in a ready‑to‑fire arrangement in/near the turret, with additional rounds stowed in an anti‑blast compartment.
Coaxial Weapon System
Note 1 x Coaxial 7.62 mm MG; roof/pintle mounts for 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm MG.
Auxiliary Weapon System
Note Turret can be fitted with a HITROLE Light remote weapon station (RWS) with 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm MG or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher for urban/peacekeeping roles.
Protection
Armor High‑hardness monocoque steel hull, redesigned from the original Centauro with improved geometry and armor packages. Anti‑blast ammunition compartment and segregated stowage to mitigate cook‑off and sympathetic detonation. Anti‑mine blast seats for all crew.
Applique Armor Add‑on and modular armor to reach higher STANAG / AEP‑55 protection levels, including: Protection against medium‑caliber KE rounds, artillery fragments, and EFPs, depending on kit configuration; Enhanced protection against anti‑tank mines and IEDs.
NBC Protection Yes
Situational Awareness and Soft‑Kill Laser warning receiver for threat detection. Provision for radio jammers/anti‑RCIED systems.
Smoke Equipment 8 x 81 mm dischargers
Fire-Control and Sights
Note New‑generation HITFACT II digital turret with fully digitized architecture. Panoramic commander’s sight with thermal/TV channels, independent from the gunner’s sight, enabling hunter‑killer engagement. Gunner’s stabilized day/night sight with thermal imager and laser rangefinder; back‑up sight for degraded modes. Integrated C3/C4I capability, allowing full participation in networked operations and battle‑management systems.
