Description

The Royal Navy's Vanguard-class replacement, Successor-class since 2012, is a new ballistic submarine intended to serve as the United Kingdom's main nuclear deterrent well into the 2060s. The Royal Navy might order three or four boats powered by a new nuclear reactor called Pressurized Water Reactor 3. The program cost is estimated at £11-14 billion and will leverage technologies developed along with the United States Navy for its Ohio-class submarine replacement program. Compared with the four Vanguard-class boats, the new strategic submarines could carry a minor number of ballistic missiles and warheads with the number of weapons reduced from the current 16 D-5 Trident II to only 12. Early plans for the new submarine class were announced in May 2011 with the construction decision to be taken in 2016. The lead ships should be commissioned in 2028.
