Description

The Low-Cost Extended Range Air Defense (Lower-AD) is a US Army surface-to-air missile program intended to fill the gap between the Stinger and the Patriot missile systems. The Lower-AD has a maximum parabolic range of more than 25 kilometers and is intended to shoot down a wide variety of airborne targets specially unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and subsonic cruise missiles. The missile is cost effective against low-cost UAVs such as those used by Yemen rebels against Saudi Arabia in 2019. The program started in 2019 conducting its first successful test flight in November 2020. The Lower-AD missile system will be deployed onboard standard US Army trucks each carrying 15 (5x3) missiles.
