The AMX is a twin-seat (AMX-T) or single-seat (AMX), single engine, subsonic aircraft designed to perform advanced training in support of front-line combat aircraft (AMX-T configuration) as well as light attack missions (AMX). These aircraft represent a low cost option for Air Forces that need to get such a capabilities but having slim budget. The AMX aircraft was procured in the 1990s by the Air Forces of Italy and Brazil which are the countries responsible for the program. Finmeccanica (Italy) and Embraer (Brazil) developed this aircraft and are upgrading the existing fleet through the addition of new weapon systems such as Piranha missiles or GPS-guided bombs.
