R-11

The R-11 is a mobile short range ballistic missile (SRBM) developed by the Soviets in support of battlefield tactical artillery. It is better known by its US/NATO designation as the SS-1 Scud missile. R-11 is based on single stage using liquid propellant. It can be equipped with a conventional, chemical, nuclear or bacteriological warhead. It has been exported to countries all over the world.In the 1990s the road-mobile R-11 missile was deemed as obsolete. Russia is marketing the Iskander tactical ballistic missile system as a replacement to international customers. During the Gulf War of 1991 the R-11/Scud missile was the most noticeable asset used by the Iraqi armed forces. Saudi Arabia and Israel were attacked by Iraq using such missiles. Since its entry into service in the late 1950s, the Soviet Union as well as many other countries such as Iraq or North Korea have developed modified variants with different payloads and ranges.
