Description

The AN/FPS-124 “Seek Frost” is a high-reliability, unattended, and easily maintained short-range air defense radar designed as a gap filler for the North Warning System. Operating in the L-band (1218 to 1398 MHz across six assigned frequencies) with an instrumented range of 70 nautical miles (approximately 113 km), it complements the AN/FPS-117 long-range surveillance radars. The system is particularly effective at detecting and tracking small radar cross-section, low-flying targets, such as cruise missiles penetrating US and Canadian airspace. Its cylindrical phased-array antenna, approximately 3.66 meters tall with a 1.25-meter diameter, houses the transmitter/controller electronics, cooled by 11 fans, which are the only moving parts. The AN/FPS-124 boasts a mean time between critical failures (MTBCF) exceeding 4000 hours and a mean time to repair (MTTR) under 30 minutes. A total of 39 units have been produced.
