Description
The Shourya is a medium range ballistic missile (MRBM) being developed by India's Defense, Research and Development Organization (DRDO). Its design focuses on simplicity of operation and maintenance. The canister-based missile system has a maximum range of 600 or 700 kilometers carrying a 1 ton warhead/payload and can be equipped with a nuclear warhead. It can be easily handled, transported and stored within the canister for longer shelf life. The Shourya is provided with a certain degree of maneuverability to evade missile defenses. India carried out the first test launch from the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Balasore in Orissa on November 12, 2008.
