Description
The Orlan is a ground effect vehicle (GEV), also known as Ekranoplan or wing-in-ground-effect craft, being developed by Russia to patrol the Northern Sea routes. Besides, the Orlan which combines characteristics from a ship and an airplane may be deployed in the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea as well. The 300-ton craft will be equipped with missiles to engage surface ships and other potential targets. The Alekseev Hydrofoil Design Bureau is the responsible for the development of the new project. The Russian Ministry of Defense expects the new Orlan Ekranoplan to achieve initial operational capability by 2027.
