The Russian Mistral class ships are the product of a foreign military sale agreement between France and Russia signed in June 2011. DCNS and STX shipyard will take care of the construction of the first two ships in France to be delivered in 2014 and 2015. The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and Baltiisky Zavod shipyard will be responsible for the third and fourth ships in Russia. Basically, the Russian Mistral will be the same design of the French Navy's Mistral amphibious assault ship but with some modifications to accommodate Russian-made equipment and aircraft. For example, the Russian ships will operate Ka-52 attack helicopters. These ships will be capable of carrying 450 troops, 70 armored vehicles and 16 rotary wing aircraft. The Russian Navy plans call for the deployment of Mistral-class amphibious assault ships in the Northern and Pacific fleets starting in 2014. In December 2012, Russia dropped the plan to build two more ships locally in Russia due to the lack of operational need of more ships of this class and their excessive cost. In early 2015, France rejected to deliver the two ships to the Russian Navy due to the crisis in Ukraine. The two ships were sold to Egypt on September 23, 2015.
