Description

The Royal Navy's new offshore patrol vessels of the River class, River 2?, are intended to play a key role in counter-terrorism, counter-piracy and anti-smuggling operations. Basically, these ships are an enlarged version of the River class by adding a flight deck to take the Royal Navy's Merlin helicopter. Besides, these vessels will feature operational flexibility through extra storage capacity and accommodation. The United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defense (MoD) ordered the construction of three vessels of this class in November 2013 as replacement for the smaller River class. The lead ship is expected to be commissioned in 2017. The UK MoD ordered two more vessels in December 2016.
