Description

The Royal Navy Echo class of survey ships were designed to provide support to submarine and amphibious operations, as well as mine warfare, through the collection of military hydrographic, oceanographic and bathymetric data. The bathymetric data consists of ocean data, its salinity and sound profile gathered using SeaSoar vehicle which can be towed behind the ship at controlled depths and carry a wide range of sensors and oceanographic equipment. The Echo class is equipped with a survey motor boat called Sapphire (H87) and Spitfire (H88) that can operate independently. The ship's propulsion system uses azimuth thrusters allowing for precise maneuver. The Echo class ship has a crew of 61-man and can accommodate up to 20 Royal Marines for security missions utilizing an array of weapons. The Royal Navy commissioned two vessels in 2003. These ships are especially well suited for long deployments of up to two years with an annual availability of 330 days.
