Description

The XM395 Precision Guided Mortar Munition (PGMM) is a modular, precision guided 120mm mortar round which employs a semi-active laser seeker. The new mortar munition achieves unprecedented accuracy and extended range over current mortar systems. It can be armed with different warheads thanks to its modular design. The XM395 is intended against armored vehicles and fortifications, and will be available for US Army Legacy, Interim and Future Combat Systems. It will make possible to attack specific targets with a man-in-the-loop laser designation capability. Its maneuverability enables to shape the trajectory to optimize the angle of attack on the target. ATK and Lockheed-Martin competed for the PGMM program until 2003 when ATK was chosen to perform System Development and Demonstration by the US Army. Lockheed-Martin protested the decision which led to a second bidding process finally won by ATK in December 2004.The Lockheed-Martin XM395 munition proposal was based on the proven Bussard projectile developed by Diehl Corporation. On December 2, 2004, ATK was awarded a $80 million contract from the US Army covering design, development, and low rate initial production in support of the XM395 PGMM weapon. This initial contract will run through 2009 with the entire program, including full rate production, valued in excess of $500 million.
