The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Soryuu, also known as Class 501, is an advanced class of conventionally-powered attack submarines fitted with the Stirling Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. The Stirling works in combination with four traditional diesel-electric engines. Thanks to AIP the Soryuu-class boats can operate without snorkel which makes them harder to detect by surface ships and maritime patrol aircraft. Besides, these ships feature an X rudder which minimizes the acoustic signature making the submarine harder to detect. The lead ship, SS 501 JS Soryuu, equipped with such a propulsion system was launched December 2007 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Kobe, Japan. So far, the JMSDF has commissioned three ships as replacement for the Harushio-class submarines. These boats are intended to perform both anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) missions in blue waters. They are fitted with six 533mm torpedo tubes to release Type 89 torpedoes, sub-Harpoon missiles and mines. The 2,950-ton Soryuu-class submarines can reach a top speed of 20 knots thanks to its diesel-electric/AIP propulsion system providing 8,000-shp of power.
