Description

The AN/TPS-79 Multi-Mission Surveillance Radar (MMSR) is a highly mobile, rapidly deployable, modular 3D solid-state radar system designed for medium-range air surveillance, air traffic control, and coastal surveillance. Operating in the S-band (2.7-2.9 GHz) with a peak power of 11 or 21 kW, it provides primary surveillance radar coverage for non-cooperative targets up to 60 or 80 nautical miles and secondary surveillance radar coverage for cooperative targets up to 120 nautical miles. The system features a modified parabolic reflector with a monopulse duplexer, offering selectable linear or circular polarization, and an integrated Mode S-compatible secondary radar antenna. Improvements to the AN/TPS-79, including a modified transmitter and antenna, digital receiver, and radar data subsystems, enable its use as an Air Traffic Control/Approach/Landing System (ATCALS) and a Deployable Radar Approach Control (D-RAPCON) subsystem, replacing older AN/MPN-14K and AN/TPN-19 Airport Surveillance Radars. It can be transported by land, sea, or air (C-130 or CH-53) and has a setup/pack-up time of less than 90 minutes. Lockheed Martin Overseas Corporation and the Romanian Ministry of Defense have a co-production contract for 17 TPS-79(R) systems for Romania’s Phase II “Gap Filler” program.
