R-11
The US Air Force R-11 is an airfield refueling truck powered by an hybrid electric engine developed by the Advanced Power Technology Office and Mack-Volvo Corporation to save fuel and energy. The truck carries a 6,000-galon aviation fuel tank. Its propulsion system combines a diesel engine, electric engine and battery pack which stores electric power for the electric engine thereby hybrid-electric engine minimizes fuel consumption. In October 2005 R-11 first prototype was still undergoing testing at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. The prototype was valued at $1.2 million and was expected to conduct demonstration and validation for heavy duty at Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina, by the end of 2005. The US Air Force and Mack Volvo estimated that R-11's diesel-electric propulsion can bring 20 percent fuel economy savings.
