Trident II
Trident II
The D-5 Trident II is a submarine-launched, inertial-guided, intercontinental ballistic missile designed to be an integral part of the American nuclear deterrent aboard Ohio-class submarines. It was first deployed in 1990 and 10 Ohio-class submarines were armed with this missile. The Trident II features greater payload and is more sophisticated than Trident I. The D-5 Trident II, also known as UGM-133A, is a three-stage solid fuel ballistic missile armed with up to 14 nuclear warheads called Multiple Independently targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV). Each MIRV can be assigned to different targets within the impact area covered by the ballistic missile that usually is measured in hundreds of kilometers. The Trident II was installed in the last 10 Ohio-class submarines commissioned by the US Navy. The Trident II missile could be installed in another four Ohio-class boats and there are plans to keep this submarine-launched ballistic missile in active service with the fleet until 2042. As of June 2005, Trident II program was valued at $36.9 billion for the US Navy which had commitments on 561 ballistic missiles.
