Type 85 II
Type 85 II

China's Type 85 is a main battle tank (MBT) derived from Type 80 tank. The Type 80 is an evolution from T-62/Type 69 chassis. Type 85 features improved armor and a 125mm cannon fitted with automatic ammunition loading system which reduces the crew to only three-man compared to four in the Type 80. It is powered by a 730-hp diesel engine which allows for a top speed of 57.25 kph. In addition to its 125mm cannon, Type 85 is equipped with a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7mm roof-mounted anti-aircraft gun. Entry into service of Type 85 in the Chinese Army occurred in the late 1980s or early 1990s with several thousands tanks deployed. Type 85 was replaced as the front line MBT of the People's Liberation Army by the more sophisticated Type 96 in the late 1990s. Approximately 200/300 of these main battle tanks were sold to Pakistan under Type 85-HM designation in the first half of the 1990s.
