Description

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) is an initiative intended to deliver a counter hypersonic interceptor. The GPI missile will be delivered through the Aegis weapon system installed on the US Navy destroyers. The GPI started in late 2021 and is expected to be achieving initial operational capability (IOC) by 2030. In November 2021, the MDA selected Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman as bidders for the new weapon system. Japan joined the GPI initiative in May 2024.
