Horizon
The Horizon (Hélicoptère d’Observation Radar et d’Investigation sur Zone) is an X-band airborne battlefield surveillance and target designation radar system with an instrumented range of 150 km. Designed for deployment on the Aerospatiale Super Puma helicopter, it can operate autonomously or be remotely controlled from a ground station. The system comprises three internal units—transceiver, processor, and control—and an external, wide, flat antenna that deploys vertically for mechanical rotation during flight and folds backward under the helicopter tail for landing. Development of the Horizon radar, a more economical version of the mid-1980s Orchidée battlefield radar, began in 1992, with deliveries to the French Army commencing in the summer of 1996.
