Description

The US Air Force (USAF) Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) is a program at replacing the aging arsenal of Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM). The GBSD program keys are adaptability and flexibility to deal with changing technology and threat environments. In July 2016, the USAF released a statement calling for biddings from defense firms to develop the new weapon system. The GBSD ballistic missile may enter service by 2025 with the aim to stay operational through 2075. In September 2020 the US Air Force selected Northrop Grumman to develop the GBSD missile under a $13.3 billion development contract. The new strategic missile is expected to be fielded by 2029. The GBSD was officially designated the LGM-35A Sentinel on April 5, 2022. In early 2024, the program cost increased to $131 billion and the entry into service was delayed to 2031. Production of the new missile is expected to last until the 2070s.
