The ROSS will feature a high degree of use of robots making it unnecessary the presence of a manned crew to guarantee its maintenance. Thus, the service life of the station is unlimited being placed in a high orbit at 400 kilometers of altitude allowing monitoring of whole Russian territory from space. The project is split in two stages with the first stage implemented beginning in 2025 and the second one in 2030. The Russian Orbital Space Station project was made public in April 2021 and should be fully deployed and functional by 2035. The first manned flight is planned for 2026. In May 2022, Roscosmos awarded a 3 billion ruble development contract to RSC Energia. The first module is expected for launch by 2026. In early 2023, the first launch was delayed until 2027.
