Description

The SPRAT (Système de Pose Rapide de Travures or Rapid Bridge Installation System in English) is an innovative modular assault bridging system designed and produced by CNIM for the French Army. The system relies on a 10x10 heavy vehicle carrying the variable length bridge that includes two sections allowing either to cross gaps up to 26 meters (25 meters) or two laying two bridges to cross gaps of up to 14.3 meters (13 meters) each. The SPRAT features excellent mobility and lower maintenance and operating costs compared with tracked platforms. The assault bridge is setup in a less than 10 minutes and is certified to support all existing wheeled and tracked vehicles in service within the French Army including the Leclerc main battle tank. In 2003, the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) awarded CNIM a contract for the production of 10 SPRAT systems through 2013. In addition to the assault bridge carrier vehicle, the system also includes a 6x6 tractor with a trailer loaded with supplementary bridge components to support the assault bridge carrier. The carrier vehicle is operated by a crew of two-man which can operate the assault bridge system from the armored cab.
