Description

The Indian Navy's Delhi-class destroyers have been designed to perform anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and anti-air warfare (AAW). Three ships were built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) and commissioned into the Indian Navy between 1997 and 2001. Aft flight deck and hangar have been provided allowing operations of two Sea King ASW helicopters. All in, the Delhi-class destroyers along with Talwar-class frigates are the most capable surface combatants in active duty with the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy has ordered three new P-15A destroyers which are a derivative of Delhi design. The Delhi-class destroyers weapon system comprises 16 (4x4) Uran/SS-N-25 Switchblade anti-ship missiles mounted at the ship's bow, two SA-N-7/Shtil air defense systems with the missile ramps mounted at bow and stern with 24 9M38 missiles each, on 100mm gun, four 30mm anti-aircraft guns, and two triple 12.75-inch torpedo tubes. The Indian Navy may upgrade the Delhi destroyers replacing the SS-N-25 subsonic missiles by BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles. The ship's propulsion system COmbined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) consists of two diesel engines for cruise developing 10,000-shp and two gas turbines developing 54,000-shp allowing a top speed of 28 knots.
