Description

BARAK is a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) intended to protect ships and ground targets from aircraft and missile threats flying at low altitude and high-speed and featuring high maneuverability. Rafael introduced the BARAK missile in the 1980s fitted with a radar Command-to-Line-Of-Sight (CLOS) guidance system. As the basis for sophisticated point air defense systems BARAK missile is able to defeat supersonic and low radar cross section/stealth threats, sea-skimming missiles and even multiple threats getting closer to the target simultaneously. The Israeli Navy is the primary operator of this missile system which has been sold to several international navies. BARAK missile features vertical launch from an eight-cell launcher; full 360-degree coverage; operation in day/night and all weather conditions; high kill probability; automatic and semi-automatic engagement; and short reaction time. This missile system can engage targets at ranges from 500 meters to 10-12 kilometers at altitudes of up to 5,500 meters. The missile has a top speed in excess of Mach 2. Naval applications of BARAK missile are mated with IAI/ELTA EL/M-2221 STGR search, track and guidance radar and EL/M-2228S AMDR automatic missile detection radar. Rafael developed the truck-mounted BARAK/ADAMS ground-based air defense system based on the proven BARAK missile. In early 2006, Rafael in cooperation with Thales were demonstrating the DEFENDER ground-based air defense system which combines BARAK with Thales FLYCATCHER Mk 2 command and fire control radar which provides surveillance and tracking capabilities. FLYCATCHER can control both guns and missile systems. The live fire demonstrations against drones were carried out in Israel.
