Description

The Payload Launch Vehicle (PLV), or GMD interceptor, is a booster used to fly the EKV designed to destroy ballistic missiles in midcourse out of the atmosphere. Once launched, the PLV will be directed to the interception area to intercept the incoming ballistic missile. Then, the EKV separates from the booster and guides itself to intercept the reentry vehicle. The first GMD Interceptor (PLV+EKV) was emplaced at Fort Greely, Alaska, on 22 July 2004. By the end of 2005, it is expected that the emplacement of16 interceptors will be completed. Four additional interceptors were planned for emplacement at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, but as of December 2004, it seems that that figure was cut off to only two GMD interceptors.
