Description

The Huon class minehunters were built by ADI Limited for the Royal Australian Navy under a contract worth around $600 million. From 1999 to 2002 6 Huon-class ships were delivered to the Royal Australian Navy. The Huon class ships are an improved derivative of the proven Italian Lerici minehunters, which have been selected by the navies of the United States, Italy, Australia, Malaysia and Nigeria. Huon class features low magnetic and acoustic signatures, a high resistance to shock, a high frequency variable depth sonar type 2093 (30-100 Khz for mine detection and 300-500 for classification) capable of mine detection at ranges in excess of 1,000 meters and classification at ranges greater than 200 meters, an ADI's Double Oropesa lightweight mechanical minesweeping system, a Mini Dyad (magnetic field generator), a Kelvin Hughes 1007 I-band radar, a RADAMEC Electro-Optical surveillance system (CCD-TV, IR imaging and laser rangefinder), Prism III ESM, a DS30B 30 mm naval gun, 2 Super Barricade ECM, and 2 Double Eagle II mine disposal vehicles. The Huon class minehunters are powered by a single Fincantieri supercharged V8 diesel engine providing 1,960-hp. 3 Auxiliary Propulsion Units, 2 forward and 1 aft, are provided for minehunting operations.
