Description
The J-20S is a twin-seater variant of the J-20 fifth generation aircraft initially powered by two WS-10 Taihang thrust vectoring control (TVC) engines. The J-20S performed its maiden flight in late August 2021 becoming the first twin-seat fifth generation aircraft. The aircraft mission remains uncertain but seems to be linked to the GJ-11 unmanned combat air vehicle operating as a sixth-generation aircraft. The serial production aircraft are expected to be powered by WS-15 engines adding supercruise and extended range compared with the J-20A aircraft. The J-20S should be fielded within the PLAAF in the 2025-2028 timeframe.
