The M-SAM (Multi-function Surface to Air Missile), also known as Cheolmae II, is a low and medium altitude air defense system to replace current Hawk SAMs within the Republic of Korea Army. It has been designed to engage both aircraft and missiles at ranges of 30-60 kilometers. The program already underwent full scale development stage in the 2000s with production starting after 2009. The Republic of Korea may have put into active duty the first M-SAM mid-range air defense system equipped with KM-SAM missiles beginning in 2011. The M-SAM entered service in 2015 with the KM-SAM Block I missile. Each M-SAM air defense system comprises 4-to-6 fire units with 8 missiles each, X-band multifunctional radar, command and control vehicle, and power generator vehicle. The weapon system uses the K-SAM Block I and Block II surface-to-air missiles. This air defense has been exported to Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
