Description

The JZ/QF-612, also known as Smart Hunter, is a Chinese Command and Control Radar designed to detect low-altitude aircraft and provide essential data for air defense systems such as the Igla-S and ZU-23. This radar departs from traditional designs by integrating various functions—target detection, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), shooter positioning, and command for engagement—into a single system through miniaturization and integration. As the primary tactical air defense Command and Control (C2) system, the JZ/QF-612 generates a localized fused air picture. It accepts inputs from radars like the CLC-2 and interfaces with higher-tier Integrated Air Defense Systems (IADS). The system assigns engagement tasks to Short-Range Air Defense (SHORAD) units, Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Guns (SPAAG), and Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS) teams, while also disseminating digitally cued target tracks and sector warnings. The JZ/QF-612 operates through: - **Upward Links**: Strategic and regional air defense centers provide a broader theater air picture and early warning. - **Lateral Links**: Adjacent brigades share low-altitude threat data. - **Downward Links**: HQ-17A batteries receive digital cueing, SPAAG units get target identification and sector-of-fire instructions, and MANPADS teams receive simplified cueing packages that include bearing, likely altitude, and threat type. This system enhances the rapid hand-off of targets between sectors, reduces the detect-to-engage timeline at the brigade level, and creates ambiguity for adversaries through the unpredictable deployment of sensors and shooters.
